What is the proper care of a poinsettia?

You have to consider where these plants are native fauna. You find them in hot, Mediterranean-type climate countries. So they need a LOT of light (indirect if possible), they don't like cold, they like an occasional misting of water, don't water them until they get dry(ish) and then stand them in water until they soak up what they need, then remove them - never leave them standing in water. Under/over-watering results in browning leaves and over-watering results in leaf drop (they think it's winter). They don't like drafts, they don't like cold, they don't like wind, they don't really like being moved so protect them when you have to move them. If you are keeping yours longterm, fertilize after blooming.

Poinsettias need a lot of light. The more sun you can give them the better. When they are not in enough light the lower leaves fall off and you are left with nothing but colored bracts on tall stems. Water when the top few inches of soil are dry. If the plant is in a foil or paper pot cover you need to empty the excess water out of it after you water. They do not like to be very soggy. If you can keep it alive until next fall and want it to flower again, it needs to recieve at least 12 hours of uninterupted darkness (complete darkness) every night for 6-8 weeks.
Reply:Mine went in the trash last weekend. I could only keep them going when we lived in California. They need lots of light. In the Northwest, there just is not enough.
Reply:Throw it out and buy a new one in December.
