I have heard that poinsettias are the rhododendron of Hawaii, so I would think you would plant it in a similar way. Light-shade,maybe morning sun but shaded, dig a hole a little bit bigger then the root ball of the plant, but not as deep, you want it to be mounded at the top, make the hole slightly narrower, so there is a little air pocket under the root ball, this will ensure it is never sitting in water. Water the plant in 30 minute increments on a very slow drip, set the water hose right on top of the dirt, at the center of the plant where it goes into the dirt. I don't know where you live, so you should double check, maybe with a plant encyclopedia?!
How do I plant a poinsettia plant outdoors?
First of all you need to be in a hot dry climate similar to its' native land. When i lived in California i planted mine outside just like any plant, dug a hole, put water in the hole, the plant in the hole, and pressed firmly around the root ball to disperse the water and any air trapped under the roots. It grew to a large bush. The only problem is i didn't realise that wind of any sort is NO GOOD. It blows the petals off of the flowers and breaks the fragile stems. So make sure the spot you pick is very wind proofed. Unlike the other answer you received, mine was in full sun all day and it grew well. P.S. My entire yard was on drip watering and daily sprinklers.
