What happens if a dog eats a poinsettia?

I work at a Vets office and I acutally took a call of this nature. The vet informed me to tell the owner that poinsettias are not toxic to animals as previously thought. However, if an animal eats part of the plant, it may cause the animal to vomit.

What happens if a dog eats a poinsettia?
It is poisonous in large amounts.
Reply:It will probably get sick, they are poisonous to pets.
Reply:Those plants are Poisonous...GET TO THE VET!!!!!!!
Reply:not sure but check with the Vet
Reply:G'day Theresa b,

Thank you for your question.

At least two things will happen. The owner of the poinsettia will get cross and the dog will get sick. While not as poisonous as rumored, the poinsettia can cause vomiting and diarrhea so it is best to get you dog treated. As to the owner of the plant, if it isn't yours, I would apologise and promise that your dog won't do it again. Given the experience your dog will have, it won't want to do it again. Poinsettia are pretty foul tasting so it is likely that your dog didn't eat enough to cause damage but get him treated. You can get something over the counter or from your vet.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Seasons regards
Reply:Dog will probably just feel sick if its a traditional poinsetta. If its a Hawaiin poinsetta, might want to get the dog to a vet.

Traditional are midly toxic while the hawaiin is extremely toxic.
Reply:they die
Reply:You should be calling your vet, not telling us people on Yahoo Answers. he could be poisoned while you are sitting there typing on here. Call the vet immediately.
Reply:The leaves are toxic to dogs. They may not die (depends on how much they eat) but they will get sick. There are certain other things you don't want to feed to a dog. Some of these are grapes (raisins too), chocolate, avocado leaves (avocados too), bones (any kind that can splinter). Some dogs don't do well with Pig ears that are available in pet depts. They throw up.
