Why do they call them "Bowl" games?

From the Super Bowl to the Poinsettia Bowl does anyone know the history as to why they call them "Bowl" games?

Why do they call them "Bowl" games?
Because the first trophies were shaped like a bowls.
Reply:Because most belong in a toilet.
Reply:because of the bowl shaped trophies
Reply:A bowl game is traditionally a post-season college football game; however the term "bowl" has become synonymous with a major football event and variations of the traditional post-season match-up between two successful college teams do exist.
