I am planning a January wedding, and my colors are ivory and dark green. As a centerpiece, I am planning on having a medium-sized, white poinsettia, surrounded by smaller white poinsettias. Is it appropriate to have each person take one of these small poinsettias as favors? I want to do something a bit more original than candies or small treats, and I'd also like to avoid the "nice-but-slightly impractical-a week later it will go in the junk drawer" kind of favor.
Are small plants like that something appropriate?
Are Small Plants Appropriate Favors?
It sounds like your idea will make a nice centerpiece. Some people will love that favor and some will leave it on the table. If you're confident that most of your guests will like it, then do it.
You could find a hospital or nursing home near your reception location and ask if they would like the leftovers. Many patients/nursing home occupants would love to have flowers in their rooms, and that way they won't go to waste.
EDIT - I wouldn't worry about the religion aspect. It's a pretty flower.
Reply:I like lucky bamboo!
Reply:The plants sound nice!! I would just make sure the medium-sized poinsettia is not too large... keep it a decent size.
also, i don't think religious affiliations of your guests should determine your plant choice
Reply:I think it's a great idea. My only suggestion would me to make it obvious that guests are allowed to take a plant home with them Otherwise you are going to end up with lots of plants!
Reply:It sounds good to me! Very pretty and original, not your typical favor. I think people will appreciate that.
Reply:I think its a great idea...something that they will actually put on display too...you can incorporate pink and red ones too...they will give the centerpieces that extra "oomph"...but I think without them is lovely too
EDIT: The thought of Religion never crossed my mind
Reply:Hi Rebecca and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
Never mind the answer from Ricardo....read his other answers...he has no idea what he is talking about! A poinsettia plant has nothing to do with being Christian!
I think it is a great idea! It fits with your color scheme, goes well for the time of year, and is very different. Yes, I think people would like to take them home.
Reply:I think a small potted plant is a nice idea. The only thing to consider is how many of your guests are flying in to be at your wedding.
My cousin got married this summer and had small trees as their wedding favour. It was really nice because both the bride and groom are avid outdoors people. The problem was the grooms family flew in from Austria and many of the Brides family flew in from other places in Canada and were unable to take the plants home with them.
If most of your guests are local I would say this is a great idea. But if many have to travel it may not be the best idea.
Reply:I think it's a great idea. I'm a Christian but I have no idea why poinsettias are associated??? that's a first for me lol
Reply:I think it's a cute idea. Maybe you should get cute little white pots and write your names and wedding date on them in green, permanent marker. Nice!
I agree, it doesn't matter if they are Christian or not, they should understand that it is a decoration, not a religious reference. If they don't want to take one, they don't have to. I would personally be excited to get one.
Reply:I think it's a great idea. I did something similar for my July 07' wedding. We did "lucky bamboo" in tall cylinder vases (tiny pebbles in the bottom) and had a personalized label made. It's great to go over to my friends and families homes now and see "my" bamboo..I'm sure it will be the same for "your" poinsettias!
Reply:I think that sounds really nice! Not everyone is going to want to take one (esp out-of-towners and most male guests) but I'm sure there will be lots of guests that will want to take more than one. I would suggest doing one small plant per couple (and one each for any singles)
Reply:I think it is nice idea. You can donate any leftovers to a local nursing home.
Re: a previous comment about only religious people appreciating poinsettias, that is unfounded. I personally know many non-Christians who like them and I'm sure that many were purchased this last Christmas by non-Christians. Don't assume when you obviously don't know.
Reply:Yes, plants are very nice. But, remember, not everyone is christian and appreciates poinsettias. Perhaps, for your jewish guests, you might have something like a candle or an african violet.
