as stated, poinsettias can live for years with regular watering and ferilizing every other month except for when the leaves fall off. Dont worry tho, its the life cycle--however--if you want the leaves to change color as when they were purchased, they must be placed in a pitch black dark location for 4-6 weeks prior to when you want the color...ie, mid November for late December show.
What is a poinsettias lifespan?
It can live forever with propper care and maintenance. I would reccomend miracle grow or another plant food to keep it vibrant. In the spring and summer the leaves usually go green and only change to red in the fall and winter months.

Reply:Life span is as long as you take care of them correctly. I was given a sick plant (not taken care of properly) several years ago by a friend. Believe it or not it has grown into a small tree. Each year I transplant it into a larger pot and feed as I do the rest of my tropical plants. I have to keep it trimmed to contain a simple formation. It is almost 5 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter. Sadly to say I haven't the room to place it in the darkness needed for blooms so during the holiday time I place silk blooms all over the plant. Each year I change the colors to match my holiday decor. Good luck with yours and don't give up.......
Reply:I've managed to keep a poinsettia plant from one Christmas to the other. It was fresh from the hothouse for the first Christmas and after a ton of coddling, I managed to get some of the bracks red for the second Christmas.
Reply:Two days of sad looking leaves falling off when brought out of the nursery into below freezing weather, into a warm car and into the cold to go inside the house and sit on the table. But with proper care and taking starts, forever. I did discover that they need put in a darker area to stimulate a good, healthy bloom by the holidays.
Reply:my mom has had a poinsettia growing for 18 years but i cant have one longer then 4 months all depends on where u plant it an how u take care of it

Reply:A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present the Christ Child at Christmas Eve services. As Pepita walked slowly to the chapel with her cousin Pedro, her heart was filled with sadness rather than joy. "I am sure, Pepita, that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes," said Pedro consolingly.
Not knowing what else to do, Pepita knelt by the roadside and gathered a handful of common weeds, fashioning them into a small bouguet. Looking at the scraggly bunch of weeds she felt more saddened and embarrassed than ever by the humbleness of her offering. She fought back a tear as she entered the small village chapel.
As she approached the alter, she remembered Pedro's kind words. She felt her spirit lift as she knelt to lay the bouquet at the foot of the nativity scene.
Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into blooms of brillant red, and all who saw them were certain that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle right before their eyes.
From that day on, the bright red flowers were know as the "Flores de Noche Buena", or "Flower of the Holy Night", for they bloomed each year during the Christmas season.
Today, the common name for this plant is the poinsettia.
Dr. Joel Robers Poinsettia was the American ambassador to Mexico from 1825 to 1829 . His keen interest in botany made him very interested in the "Flower of the Holy Night" and he brought it back to his home in South Carolina. It became very popular as a Christmas plant and was named after him.

How do poinsettias leaves turn red ?
My dad asked me but i didnt know cuz im not a plant person so i figured id asked someone else and hope someone could help.
How do poinsettias leaves turn red ?
It requires 6 weeks of long nights, uninterrupted. Any light intrusion will cancel it out. It is very hard to do at home. You must put it in a closet at the same time every day. Take it out 16 hours later. You must do this every day. Thr closet must have no light leaks. This is why the nurseries sell so many each year.
Reply:Not sure exactly, but I know that it involves keeping them in complete darkness for a set period of time. This is usually done in October or November in preparation for Christmas time.
Reply:You have to put the plant in a dark place for several days

What's the best way to make crumpled artificial poinsettias look new again?
My artificial poinsettias, in storage since last Christmas, are made of some kind of fabric. If I iron them, they may melt. Suggestions on how to make them relax and look good again?
What's the best way to make crumpled artificial poinsettias look new again?
You just reminded me its time to get ours out (although we're going away, so may not bother.)
One way that may work is to spray them LIGHTLY with water and smooth them gently. Or if you have a steam iron, direct the steam at them, but don't actually iron them.
Reply:I would dip them into lukewarm water with a very mild cold water soap. Rise, lay on an old towel, and reshape them while they are damp. Let dry and see if that would do the trick. They probably just need freshen up, and since you want them "relaxed", I would try to wash them, but again, very gently and hand towel dry and lay out.

What's the use of the oasis in potting Poinsettias? It seems a wee bit on teh cruel side?
For most people Poinsettias die right after Christmas because of the oasis in which the plant was set.
What's the use of the oasis in potting Poinsettias? It seems a wee bit on teh cruel side?
They start the poinsettia cuttings in the oasis, or foam. It holds the water and keeps the cuttings moist, and then when they pot it, the oasis goes along. This helps keep them from having to be watered so often. in the greenhouses. If you want to keep your poinsettia after Christmas, take it out of the pot and gently break away as much of the oasis as possible, with minimal disturbance of the roots, and repot it in fresh potting soil, then just grow it on as a house plant.
Reply:I don't know what you mean by the plant being in an oasis. I think you chose the wrong word.
Do you mean the quality of soil from the store is very poor, the pot is too small for having a small bush in it?
If you think that is cruel, take a look at your Christmas tree. It took probably 10 years to grow to that size and people cut it down, toss it up in their living room for a month, and then throw it out to die.
It all has to do with our materialistic society. Anything we get amuses us for 10 minutes and then we throw it away to waste. I don't know anyone who has actually planted their Christmas poinsetta in their garden in the spring, or bothered keeping it over a month after Christmas. Maybe it has to do with them being entirely green all the time. You have to "force" them to get the red petals you see on the holiday plants.

Are purple poinsettias real or have they been dyed?
There are real purple poinsettias that have been cross bred. There are now several different colors which includes the purple.
I still like the red best of all.
There is also a white poinsettia that a nursery painted. Here is a pictures.....I don't think they are very pretty:

Merry Christmas to you.

The purple one I touched in Wal-mart the other day was most definitely painted as the paint came off onto my fingers....
